08.20: "Every race counts," says Seb
about the title fight...
Sebastian Vettel is confident Red Bull will again be a competitive force as the season resumes on the streets of Valencia – but admits it has to wait and see how its rivals shape up before seeing what it can achieve this weekend.

After beginning to take large chunks out of Brawn’s once huge championship leads with two successive 1-2s before the last round in Hungary, Red Bull was then surprisingly beaten by the resurgent McLaren and Ferrari teams at the tight and twisty venue in the race despite qualifying in strong second and third places.

Vettel believes the RB5 has the potential to be in the front-running mix on all types of circuit so, from his point of view, says the unknown heading into this weekend is how strong its rivals are on the fast, open street track.

“We prepared ourselves as usual for here,” he told reporters on Thursday. I think, independent from the type of circuit, we have a good car so we should be fairly competitive here as well. The question is how competitive will the others be. Circuit wise I do like the circuit, I enjoy it very much, and competitive-wise we have been good here last year [with sister team Toro Rosso] so we will see. It’s a nice circuit, I enjoy it, so I am looking forward.”

Although RBR’s winning run came to an end at the last round, the team still conclusively stayed ahead of title rival Brawn to close to within 15.5 points in the constructors’ championship. Asked if he thought it could maintain that advantage following the month-long summer break, Vettel said it would largely rest on whether Brawn had resolved its own recent car difficulties – acknowledging that neither title contender could afford to not perform at its best given the competitiveness of the entire field.

“I think it depends mainly on them,” the German star said. “Maybe in the last two or three races they didn’t get their things together and obviously this year it’s extremely crucial to perform always at your top, the cars are very tight. We have seen at the last race what can happen. I think on the Thursday [in Hungary] no one expected McLaren-Mercedes to be that strong, as well as Ferrari, and on Sunday they were quite dominant and even quicker than we, or Brawn, have been in the last races.”

Vettel himself heads into the final seven-race sprint having fallen behind team-mate Mark Webber as Button’s nearest rival in the drivers’ championship after retiring from the Hungaroring with car damage.

“For us [Red Bull drivers] it has been more or less even [during the season],” Vettel said. “Now Mark is 4.5 points ahead, but there is still a long way to go and you have seen how quickly things can change. In Hungary, obviously, turn one was not the best for me with all the KERS cars attacking and then very quickly you lose ground. On top of that we had the failure with the car, so it doesn’t help if you are about to collect a lot of points. So we will see. There are still some races left – but for both of us, every race counts.”

08.17: Ecclestone considers points system 'stupid'
and claims vettel should have chance for title...
Sebastian Vettel would still have a real chance of winning the 2009 title had F1's points system changed prior to the start of the season.

That is the claim of Bernie Ecclestone, who failed to have his desired 'medals' scoring system introduced this year due to a lack of support by the teams.

To Germany's Auto Bild, the F1 chief executive said that with the current 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points scoring system, Red Bull's Vettel is "too far behind" to mount a challenge to Jenson Button's 23-point lead in the remaining seven races of 2009.

"If the medals system that I proposed would be in (effect) now, he (Vettel) would still be in the title fight," 78-year-old Ecclestone said.

The Briton's reasoning is that, even if Vettel is unbeaten for the remainder of the season, Button could finish the races in second place and still comfortably be champion.

If the number of wins was the decisive tally, however, Vettel would be trailing Button by a factor of four 'gold medals'. Ecclestone added: "I think Vettel is capable of five more victories, but with these stupid points (system) it's not going to be enough."

08.03: Vettel also expressed his will to race in WRC
after watching Kimi Räikkönen on weekend...
After Raikkonen and Kubica, Vettel also expressed his will to race in WRC someday. He attended the finnish rally on last weekend, as a Citröen guest, and was impressed with the car's speed.

"This is the first time I attend WRC. It's fascinating", said Vettel. "The car's speed is so high, and it's so nice to watch. It's almost as fast as Formula One, but with no escape area and off road", he completed.

Vettel said he also took some advices from Sébastien Loeb. "I took some advices from him (Sébastien Loeb), and there's no one better. I've still a lot to do in Formula Once, but maybe someday I can race in WRC. I wouldn't mind a few races in the future."

07.30: "It’s a big surprise for everyone!"
says Sebastian of Schumi's comeback...
Michael Schumacher’s return to Formula One to fill in at Ferrari for badly-injured driver Felipe Massa has surprised compatriot Sebastian Vettel.

“However, things will continue as normal for us and we will have to concentrate on our own issues.”

Seven-time world champion Schumacher announced Wednesday that he would return to Ferrari in the wake of Massa’s bad accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend in Budapest which left the Brazilian hospitalised.

[RACE] "The race is still on!"
says seb about title hunting...
Sebastian Vettel was philosophical about the first-corner collision with Kimi Raikkonen which ultimately caused his retirement in Hungary despite his title hopes suffering a setback on Sunday. Ferrari driver Raikkonen hit the front-left side of the German’s RB5 as four cars battled for second place coming out of turn one, with the contact pushing Vettel out wide and down into sixth position having started on the front row.

And while he continued for a further 28 laps, he eventually pulled into retirement with front suspension damage after telling his Red Bull team over the radio that the car had become undriveable.

“I had a collision on the first corner with Kimi,” he said. “I was on the inside and had a clear run to accelerate, his car came sideways and we touched – he crashed into my car, it can happen. This was why my first pit stop was bad and, at some point, the front-left suspension gave up and we had to retire the car."

“We knew it would be close with the other teams here, but at the start of the race there’s nothing you can do other than putting your foot down," Vettel added. “We have a button on our steering wheel, which is similar to the other teams, but nothing happens if you press it. You go into the first corner and you have five or six cars next to each other instead of three or four, so it’s a different situation.”

“There are still a few races left this season and the race is still on, so we will see what we can do,” he added after dropping 23 points off the title pace.

07.26: BMW eyes Vettel for possible future reunion
RBR believed to have three-year option on Seb...
Mario Theissen insists he stands by his decision to let Sebastian Vettel return to the Red Bull family last year.

While a BMW test driver in the middle of 2007, the German marque released Vettel to race with Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso. Now just 22, the German stayed in the STR cockpit last year and then moved to main team Red Bull Racing this year, on a new two-year contract.

Moreover, if Red Bull is in contention for the 2010 championship, it is believed the energy drinks company will have the option of retaining Vettel for a further three years.

Theissen told the German daily Der Tagesspiegel that he doesn't regret letting Vettel slip through his fingers while opting instead for Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.

"If everything goes well, Sebastian's career still has 15 years in it," said Theissen. "He can drive for us in the future."
