07.23: Vettel defends under-fire Alguersuari
from criticism of other drivers...
Sebastian Vettel has jumped to the defence of Formula 1 rookie Jaime Alguersuari amid criticism from fellow drivers that he is too young to be making his debut this weekend.

"I heard Mark was not so pleased about the fact that Jaime is driving this weekend," said Vettel. "I think in the end if there is anything to criticise then I think it is the rules.

"As you can see, you end up having a situation that a driver is entering F1 without having done a single test. So I think it is extremely difficult for young drivers, independent from their age, the next generation, to get to F1 as you have no chance to prove yourself. You have only one or two days.

"If you start skiing, you know how hard it is after one or two days to really know what is going on for instance. Therefore, I wish him all the best and I think he has enough time, but for sure it is not the easiest way to go."

Vettel believes Alguersuari should take his time to build up speed this weekend.

"In the end you have to find your own way, and I think there is more than one person who gave him advice to just take his time," he explained. "That is the most important thing. If he is really quick enough or not, you can't really tell by one race. It will come or it doesn't. Every other driver has made this experience in their own way."

07.23: "Seb to be WDC, this year or next one"
says Dietrich Mateschitz...
Red Bull starlet Sebastian Vettel can be world champion by 2011, team manager Dietrich Mateschitz said on Wednesday.

"Next year or, at the latest, the year after that," energy drink billionaire Mateschitz told Sport Bild magazine, adding he believed the team would be able to keep the 22-year-old over that period if not longer.

"Sebastian fels good with us. There is no reason why he would want to move on as long as we can build him a car which he can win with," added the 65-year-old. "If we can't do that we'd have to let him go anyway. He wants to be world champion and must look out for himself."

Mateschitz said the team had quickly realised that head designer Adrian Newey had put together a good car. "We deliberately did the first tests on full tanks so that nobody realised how quick our car really is."

07.17: "Never say never," says Dominicali over Seb
when asked about the chances to see him in a red car...
Stefano Domenicali has refused to rule out the possibility that Sebastian Vettel will one day reside in a Ferrari cockpit.

When asked about 22-year-old Vettel, a two-time winner in 2009 for Red Bull Racing, Ferrari's team principal answered: "Never say never."

"I like him very much; his character is very positive and independent," Ferrari's team principal said of the German youngster. "For his age he is far ahead both technically and mentally," Domenicali told Germany's Auto Bild.

The Italian acknowledged that Michael Schumacher, Ferrari's most successful driver in history and now an advisor to the Maranello team, holds his compatriot in high regard.

"He has no doubts about how good Sebastian is," Domenicali said.

07.17: Vettel responsible for 2008 STR competivity
says Giorgio Ascanelli...
Toro Rosso technical director Giorgio Ascanelli has thanked Sebastian Vettel for his driving skills in being able to achieve strong results, including a race win, in the second half of last season. With a new driver and significant aerodynamics update coming in Hungary next weekend, the Italian is positive over the team's chances.

"The first is that the drivers are very important and last year Vettel matured enormously, getting over the difficult phase every young driver does, not understanding why he was fast or slow. A second factor was that, last year, within the limits of our own capabilities, we went down a different route to Red Bull Racing, particularly with suspension and the braking system that was different to their car. The third point is that we were racing in an era where the technical rules had been more or less stable for a decade, so performance levels flatten out, making it harder to come up with something new. This year, the pace of development has speeded up enormously and, as a small team, we have been unable to keep up with that."

"It's not as simple as saying 'last year we made a technical step forward for the second half of the year and performed well, so the same thing will happen again.' - last year, the Italian media was keen for me to puff out my chest and say 'oh yes, I am very clever and I have managed to outperform our Red Bull cousins!' but the simple answer about the end of last year is that Vettel is a great driver. I wasn't a genius last year but I don't think I am an idiot this year!"

07.15: Ralf Schumacher says RBR should help Seb
"what we saw at the Nürburgring should not happen..."
Ralf Schumacher claims that, by 'allowing' Mark Webber to take victory in Sunday's German Grand Prix, the Red Bull Racing team is compromising its chances of clinching the World Championship title this season. With the Australian currently behind his team-mate in the standings, Schumacher believes that Sebastian Vettel is the stronger driver of the pairing.

With a second consecutive Red Bull one-two result being led home by Mark Webber for the first time at the Nürburgring, Schumacher blamed the team's tactics for something which he believes could cost it the title. "There is no stable order in the case of Red Bull," Ralf told Motorsport Total. "The title is the most important thing and the team is making a mistake (by allowing its drivers to race). Sebastian is the stronger driver and needs every point he can get."

Schumacher, who retired from the Toyota team and F1 at the end of 2007, added to his criticism of the Austrian squad by explaining the comfort of Jenson Button's 21-point cushion over closest man Vettel. "In two races' time I would say that Button will no longer be in the clutches of Red Bull, even though the Brawn does seem to have some weaknesses, especially regarding the handling of the tyres when temperatures are cooler," the German explained. "There is still a chance but Red Bull certainly must collect every point possible (with Vettel)
