[RACE] "I was lucky to have the right strategy"
says seb after a good recovering race...
Sebastian Vettel said there was no way he could have beaten Mark Webber in the German Grand Prix, readily admitting that his Red Bull team-mate was too fast today.

Vettel lost ground at the start but eventually got back to second, while Webber overcame a drive-through penalty to score his first win in Formula 1.

Although Vettel is ahead of Webber in the championship, he said he could not complain about being beaten at the Nurburgring.

"Contragulations to him, today he was unbeatable so he totally deserved to win," said Vettel.

"Another one-two finish for the team. I am very, very happy. I would like to say I am very, very pleased with second but yesterday Mark did a better job and that is why he deserved to win."

The German felt his start prevented any chance of challenging for victory, as he fell behind Felipe Massa's KERS-shod Ferrari and could not pass it until the first stops.

"All the KERS cars got past me, I started fourth and then went into first corner eighth," said Vettel. "And then basically I struggled a lot with the soft tyre. There was no way to pass Felipe, he used his special button when I was quite close.

"I was lucky to have the right strategy, in the end it brought us back to the correct position."

Second place still closed Vettel to within 21 points of Jenson Button, who could only finish fifth, in the drivers' championship, as the German moved up to second.

07.11: RBR hit with fine for unsafe release
on the qualifying section...
Red Bull Racing has been fined $10,000 after German Grand Prix race stewards ruled it had created a “potentially dangerous situation” by an unsafe release of Sebastian Vettel during qualifying.

The stewards judged RBR had committed an offence after Vettel’s car was released from his pit box into the path of Kazuki Nakajima as the Williams driver made his way down the pit lane during the frantic, rain-affected Q2.

The stewards issued a statement on Saturday afternoon announcing the team had been fined and reprimanded, with RBR found to have breached Article 23.1 (i) of F1’s sporting regulations.

The statement said: “The Stewards, having received a report from the Race Director, have considered the following matter, determine a breach of the regulations has been commited by the competitor named below [Red Bull Racing] and impose the penalty referred to.

“The competitor Red Bull failed to release car 15 when it was safe to do so and created a potentially dangerous situation.”

Vettel starts fourth on the grid for Sunday’s race, while his team-mate Mark Webber claimed the team’s third consecutive pole position.

07.11: Seb's First Home Contest
in Wiesbaden...
It was a home draw for Sebastian Vettel when he took part in a football match with other F1 drivers – past and present – on the eve of the German GP.

Seb scored a late equalizer for Nazionale Piloti against a German all-star side in Wiesbaden last night bringing the teams level to 3-3, before the team - captained by Michael Schumacher - lost in a penalty shootout.

Vettel played the full 90 minutes with Schumi, Massa, Rosberg and Fisichella against a side which included members of the female German football team and Olympic medal winners.

He said: "It was great to play in front of my home fans - and to score as well. It was just a shame we didn't win though."

At half-time, Seb and Michael were interviewed for German TV and at the final whistle Vettel hung around to meet the fans and sign autographs.

It was the start of what’s set to be a busy weekend for the hometown driver…

says sebastian after qualifying...
"I'm not frustrated, but it was possible to do better. But my last lap was not great so it's not front row today. It was tight, I don't blame the car, I blame myself. Who knows for tomorrow, the weather is so unpredicatble, we'll see. It depends on your tyres and how the curcuit is acting. Anything is possible, dry, wet, something in between. It will be an exciting race tomorrow whoever does the right thing at the time will be ahead."

[FPs] "The overall loss was no that big"
says seb after free practice sessions...
Sebastian Vettel believes the problem that sidelined him on Friday morning at the Nurburgring hasn’t proved a big setback to the start of his home race weekend after he rebounded strongly in the second session.

The Silverstone winner – who had never previously driven an F1 car around the circuit – seemed to be placed on the backfoot after just 13 laps in first practice as an electronics glitch ground his Red Bull to a halt and forced him to sit out all but the final few minutes of the session.

But after being forced to watch team-mate Mark Webber dominate the remainder of the opening session, Vettel was straight on the pace from the start of second practice and ended up only slower than Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren.

“We had a problem in the morning when the engine cut off in turn one, so we lost quite a lot of track time,” Vettel said. “Thankfully it was dry again this afternoon, so the overall loss was not that big. It was quite tricky this afternoon as the circuit was still very slippery, making it hard to get a good lap and bringing the tyres in seems to be very crucial here. On top of that, the wind is very heavy and is playing some tricks, especially during braking in the last sector, but I think we have a good car, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Obviously, we still have plenty of work to do. We’ve done a lot of testing today so we will look now at what’s best in order to be well prepared for qualifying.”
