02.18: Haug wants a german at McLaren
and keeps an eye on sebastian...
McLaren-Mercedes wants to start an upcoming season with a german driver. The dream-driver for the seat in Norbert Haug's mind is Sebastian Vettel.

After the title with finnish Mika Häkkinen and british Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes Sportchef Norbert Haug wants a new german driver in the silver cars. "What is not yet, can still happen. Our wish and goal is to have a german top driver in McLaren Mercedes in the next 3-4 years," he told Bild. "We are happu, really happy with the drivers we have so far, because we have a real strong duo," says Haug, that explains that with the contracts situations of Vettel and Rosberg, "there were no possibilities."

About Vettel, that won monza 2008 with his Toro Rosso, becoming the youngest driver ever to win a race in the history of Formula One and will drive for Red Bull in 2009, Haug says, "I consider him to be a real authentic guy and already a real real strong driver. He reunites talent and will to work, like not many others."

Vettel learns pretty fast, what leads Haug to a big comparison. "Michael Schumacher was also like that," says the Mercedes chef, that keeps an eye on Vettel at Red Bull during 2009: "I believe that Red Bull will evolve a lot this year. Sebastian will show a good performance in the field."

02.19: Mateschitz expects wins from Seb
if the car is capable of doing so...
Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz expects no less than victories from Sebastian Vettel - but concedes that first the team has to give him a car capable of winning races.

"Sebastian is surely one of the greatest talents, whom we natured in our Driver Search program over the last ten years," Mateschitz told Auto Motor Und Sport.

"From him we expect 100 per cent commitment, with all his - and for his age it's unbelievable - intelligence, smartness and strength of character."

The Austrian, though, admits that if the team wants Vettel to win races they will need to give him a car that has the pace and reliability to do so.

"Expectations for the team are to give those we put in the car one at their disposal that is capable of winning - one could say to counterpart the drivers' own ability," he added.

02.18: Red Bull won't block Seb from a WDC future
if they can't provide him a winner car...
Red Bull will not become a roadblock to Sebastian Vettel's F1 title aspirations, team owner Dietrich Mateschitz has promised.

The 21-year-old German has inked a two year contract to race with the energy drink company's senior team in 2009 and 2010, but F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone has been vocal about his desire to see the highly rated driver in a truly competitive car. Red Bull has high hopes for the promising new Adrian Newey-penned RB5, but Mateschitz is realistic about wanting the most promising product of his young driver programme to succeed.

"We have a two-year contract with Sebastian," the Austrian billionaire told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "Should we be unable to give him a top car, we will certainly not want to stand in his way to the world title," added Mateschitz.

02.13: Vettel all paid up for 2009?
Money not the issue for Vettel in FIA debate...
Sebastian Vettel could be among the three drivers who have broken ranks and paid for their mandatory 2009 Superlicence credentials, according to reports in the German press.

The news website motorsport-magazin.com said Vettel is rumoured to have paid his fee to the governing FIA, contradicting the Grand Prix Drivers' Association's request that all drivers hold off amid their dispute over the rising costs.

At the Jerez test, the Red Bull driver is quoted to have told Auto Motor und Sport magazine: "What is more of a concern to us drivers is the way in which the FIA has dealt with us about this issue, rather than whether or not we are going to pay."

02.13: Ecclestone up to help Sebastian
to a top seat if he wants...
Though he admits that on current form he is unlikely to need much guidance or support, Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that he would be willing to 'help' manoeuvre Sebastian Vettel into a leading Formula 1 seat should the need arise.

Though Vettel will be competing at 'parent' concern Red Bull Racing in 2009, many paddock sages predict that sooner or later he will end up at Ferrari – a situation that would clearly please Ecclestone no end.

“If he needs any help, he can call me,” the sport's commercial rights-holder confessed to German publication Auto Bild. “Things can change quickly, and perhaps Red Bull will be happy to sell him on at the end of the year. You never know what happens.”

[TESTS / Day 03] Seb just a thousandth slower
mark takes over for tomorrow...
Sebastian Vettel was back in the Red Bull Renault cockpit for the penultimate day of this four day session. Following a long run in the morning, the car was sidelined with some bodywork damage that took a couple of hours to fix.

After that, a 'very productive afternoon' saw the team make up for lost time to get through the day’s job list, which included some aero testing and work on mechanical set-up. Vettel was third fastest overall, just a thousandth of a second slower than 2009-package pace-setter Lewis Hamilton.

Tomorrow, Mark Webber gets his second day of driving in the new RB5.
