09.23: Coulthard praise Seb RBR test
in his online column for ITV...
Sebastian Vettel's early test for his 2009 employer Red Bull Racing was about more than just allowing the German to acclimatise to the Renault-powered team. That is the claim of retiring RBR racer David Coulthard, who says the Milton-Keynes based squad was also keen to learn about why it has fallen behind the pace of Red Bull's junior team, Toro Rosso.

Writing in his online column for ITV, Coulthard said of Vettel's Jerez test: "The other aim was to help crystallise what the differences are between the RB4 chassis and the STR3 that Toro Rosso use, in terms of grip, driveability and so forth."

37-year-old Coulthard said Vettel's race-winning form was the perfect opportunity for him to compare the teams' respective cars and give feedback about other reasons for the performance differences. "So it was a useful exercise for both Sebastian and the team," said the Scot.

09.21: "Leave the poor boy in peace!"
says Schumacher about Sebastian...

Michael Schumacher insists Germany´s new Formula One star Sebastian Vettel must be left in peace and not constantly compared to his own success as a seven-times world champion.

In a frank interview here on Sunday with German tabloid Bild, Schumacher praised Vettel, 21, for grabbing Germany´s first Grand Prix win for two years at Monza on September 14.

"Leave the poor boy in peace!" Schumacher told Bild.

"When I first started out in Formula One, I hated to be continuously compared to other people and I don´t want him to be put into the same corner. He has already shown he will make his own name, I have no fear about that! Many people are elated at having one of our German drivers win," said Schumacher. "German fans need a star such as Sebastian Vettel, so they can keep their fingers crossed and get behind. Sebastian is a nice guy who deserves his success."

"Vettel will be a champion when he gets a car which is able to win consistently," said Schumacher.

"I don´t want to blame his team, but Toro Rosso is at the moment, not a world championships winning team. Next year, Vettel will be in the Red Bull team and perhaps they will be able to challenge for the top. But he has to decide where his future lies."

09.20: 'Sebastian is not for sale,'
says red bull boss Mateschitz...
F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is keen to see Sebastian Vettel switch to a top team as soon as possible.

"We will help him to achieve that," the British billionaire is quoted as saying by Autobild Motorsport.

Vettel, 21, became Formula One's youngest pole sitter and Grand Prix winner in history at Monza last weekend.

He currently drives for Toro Rosso, but is set to move up to Red Bull's sister senior team in 2009.

Ecclestone said: "I have always said that he is good. Now I say he is super."

But Vettel's boss, the Red Bull magnate Dietrich Mateschitz, is not interested in letting the exciting young German out of his grasp.

"Sebastian has a contract with us," the Austrian, who is also a billionaire, told the German newspaper Bild. "He is not for sale. With him, we want to attack the top teams and move to the top."

[TESTS / Day 04] "It has potential, but our car is faster."
Vettel said after testing RBR car...

Monza winner Sebastian Vettel has played down his notable performance this week at the wheel of Red Bull's Renault-powered RB4 chassis.
He was always among the fastest two runners on both Wednesday and Thursday, despite gearbox and engine problems.
Speaking to the Cologne publication Express, Vettel said of the RB4: "It has potential, but our (Toro Rosso's) car is faster."
Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz said after Monza that he believes the teams' Adrian Newey-penned chassis is arguably the fastest on the grid at present.
"Our handicap is the Renault engine. We don't have this problem with (Toro Rosso) Ferrari," the billionaire told Austria's Kleine Zeitung.
But Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost rejects suggestions that, given the Italian team's current form, Vettel should be lamenting his call-up to the senior outfit.
"With the many regulation changes that are coming, Toro Rosso cannot keep up.
"With Red Bull he is taking a step forward towards a top team."

[TESTS / Day 04] Toro Rosso Test Notes
from Jerez de La Frontera...
For the first time since winning the Italian Grand Prix, today Sebastian Vettel was back behind the wheel of a Toro Rosso car, after two days testing here with our sister team. Come the end of the day, it was time for a photo with all the test team crew, as this will most probably be Seb's last test session with us.

But there was no time for sentiment, as Vettel had a busy programme to work through, most of it centred on aerodynamic and set-up work aimed at the final four races of the year. He also evaluated some suspension and power steering options, as well as some testing aimed at 2009 car systems. Despite some strong wind in the morning and a slower track, the day produced positive results.

[TESTs / Day 03] Vettel, first also in Jerez
18 September 2008...

Italian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel was the fastest man around Jerez on Thursday as he spent another day testing with his 2009 team, Red Bull Racing. Sister team - and Vettel’s current employers - Toro Rosso tried out Super Aguri refugee Takuma Sato in his absence.

In a session interrupted by showers, Vettel completed just 37 laps of the Spanish circuit, barely half that of second-placed man Nick Heidfeld, who finished just over a tenth down on his fellow German in the BMW Sauber.

Vettel was forced to sit out the early part of the morning session as his RB4 required an unscheduled engine change. Once out on track, he successfully worked through both an aero and a mechanical comparison test which produced positive results. Red Bull tester Sebastien Buemi will be back in action on Friday as Vettel returns to Toro Rosso.
