Sebastian Vettel insists he has no concerns that his move to Red Bull Racing next year will prove ill-timed in light of the team’s loss of competitiveness in recent races.
Vettel’s promotion from Scuderia Toro Rosso to the senior Red Bull squad for 2009 was announced at the British Grand Prix – since when RBR has slipped down the midfield hierarchy while STR has increasingly gained the upper hand.
But when asked by ITV Sport’s Martin Brundle whether he had had any second thoughts about his impending switch, Vettel said: “No, not at all. I think it’s the right step, it’s a logical step.”
The 21-year-old German is confident that RBR remains the better long-term prospect, suggesting that it has simply temporarily lost its way over the past few grand prix weekends.
“In the end you have to see all the races separately,” said Vettel. “I think in the last two or three races where we have been very competitive, they were struggling and maybe trying too many things at the same time. The midfield this year is so tight, and when you don’t use all of your potential or just lack two or three tenths, then it can be that you are at the bottom of this group – and that can be from P6 or P7 down to P15. A few things can make a huge difference.”

[RACE] "The last lap was unbelievable"
sebastian told on the str press release...
Sebastian Vettel (STR3-03): Pos. 5th"Both me and Seb have good reason to smile after a race like that. The last lap was unbelievable and I was shocked as I got passed in the last fifty metres and then Heidfeld followed by Alonso drove past me with a "whoosh" on their intermediates.
It was very tricky at the end and you really had to trust your car. We were all saying that Eau Rouge and Blanchimont are now flat, but with a few drops of rain, I tell you, you see the real nature of these corners. Overall it was a fantastic race, even though I was stuck in traffic for a while. But I was very happy with the car and we had a very strong pace today. The guys at the front are still in a different dimension, but we have made some good steps forward and now it is up to us to use that potential at the next few races."

[QLF] "It was a strong qualifyng performance"
seb tells toro rosso qualifying notes...
Sebastian Vettel - 10th: "I'm quite happy and we can be satisfied to get both cars in Q3, which we did not expect at this track. It was a strong qualifying performance. I was struggling a bit on those sections where the driver doesn't have to do much. I could not find the pace my teammate had.
"I messed up my last run a bit but it didn't affect the result in the end. I think we have a good strategy for both cars so let's see what happens. At the moment, I'm starting on the dirty side of the track but if it rains for the race."
