10.01: Singapore penalty undeserved
according to Red Bull data, Seb never exceeded the speed limit...
Sebastian Vettel does not think he sped in the pitlane last Sunday in Singapore. The Red Bull driver's already slight championship chances diminished yet further under the Singapore floodlights, where he received a drive-through penalty for breaching the pitlane speed limit by 1.4kmh.

Team officials unofficially protested the infringement after the race, showing the stewards and race director Charlie Whiting telemetry that did not back up the speeding.

Vettel told the German news agency SID on Thursday that he believes there was a "measuring error" by the FIA.

"I hope the same thing doesn't happy to anyone else in the future," he said. "The speed limit should be independent of the track on which you're driving."

He is referring to the fact that pitlane speed is not measured by laser or radar, but rather by measuring the time it takes cars to travel through various fixed segments.

"We have data from our car that shows clearly that we didn't exceed the speed limit," said Vettel, whose Renault powered car is limited electronically in the pitlane to 99.5kmh.

"Drivers take different lines in the pitlane. In the (Singapore) pit entry there was a line which you could drive over. Some did it a little, others a little bit more, like myself. It was completely legal," he explained.

Cutting the pitlane curve, Vettel believes, had the result of making it appear he went too fast through one of the timed segments.

10.01: "If you want to win you can’t afford many DNFs"
says sebastian about his season...
Sebastian Vettel says the five non-finishes he has registered this season were the main reason his world championship challenge never came to fruition.

“It’s been a long year, a little bit up and down, and there were five races we didn’t finish, so it could have been a little bit better,” he said. "But in the races we finished I think we always achieved more or less our maximum. Throughout the season we’ve had very, very good pace. Sometimes we weren’t able to use it, but overall it’s been very positive. Obviously there are three more races and we have a very competitive car still, so we’ll try to win some more.”

Asked why his title bid had unravelled, Vettel said he and Red Bull had simply let too many opportunities slip through their fingers.

“It’s not a secret: If you want to win the championship you can’t afford many DNFs – you should always finish, ideally in the points,” he said. “So that’s one thing. For the team and myself it was the first time we’ve been in that kind of position, so obviously there are a lot of things we’ve learned already and we still have to learn. Looking back, there were more than two races where we had the pace to win and didn’t.”

He added that the competitiveness and unpredictability of the 2009 season made it harder to be consistent than in previous years.

“I think this year has been quite special,” he said. “Obviously the last race here was in 2006, and I was looking back at the car performances back then and the championship. At Suzuka Michael [Schumacher] had the engine failure in the race, but up to that point there were exactly three drivers who were able to win races – Michael, Fernando and Felipe. It was quite different than it is now. This year it was much closer and therefore more up and down.”

Vettel admitted that the penalties he received after the Melbourne season-opener and in Singapore had been costly, but said he and the team needed to tighten up other areas of their performance too.

“All in all, if you want to fight for the championship and you want to win the championship, you need to have a season without any trouble from any side – penalties, DNFs, failures or whatever,” he said. “We’ve been on the podium six times but five times we didn’t finish. “I think still it has been a very good season so far, and it’s not over yet, but for sure we could have done better.”

[PREVIEW] "Suzuka is the best track in the world"
says sebastian about japanese grand prix...
Sebastian Vettel: "Suzuka is the best track in the world. I drove the two hours of Friday free practice here at the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix. The first hour was wet, which was pretty scary as I didn't know where the track went. I'm looking forward to racing there as it's one of the most challenging circuits with a lot of high speed corners. It's enjoyable and I think it should suit our car. I like the culture and the people in Japan. Last year, I climbed Mount Fuji and I've also spent time in Tokyo. The food is great, although maybe not all of it! Everything about the place is very disciplined and ordered, which I like."

[RACE] Vettel: "The car was falling apart!"
says sebastian after race...
"We had to bring the car home, 4th was all we could do. I had the chance for the podium, we put pressure on Lewis, I knew I would pit earlier though. I was surprised by the penalty, I wasn't rushing so I don't know why I was speeding, we will see if it was electronic. Disappointing at the car was quick, unlucky with the start and traffic, after that with the drive through it was the best we could do. The car was falling apart, it was a tough race for the car with the bumps. My mirrors vibrated and fell off, the car wasn't the same. Nowadays, every bit of downforce is useful and on top of that the diffuser was damaged by hitting the kerb. We will do the same, try to attack and win, we were close today, we still have a chance for the championship. We'll keep pushing and try to win races."

[QLF] "It's great to be back"
says second placed Seb after the red-flagged qualification...
Sebastian Vettel - 2nd: “Unfortunately, when the red flag came out it was my first run on new tyres. I had previously been on used tyres, so my flying lap wasn’t as easy or relaxed as it might have been. But, at the end of the day, it’s great to be back qualifying near the front, especially on a street circuit. The car has been very good all weekend and I’ve been feeling comfortable. It was a shame the red flag came out, but we’ll keep pushing tomorrow. Let’s see – it’s a long race and it will be tough, but we have all that it takes, so I’m looking forward to it.”
