Sebastian Vettel 18th:“My first lap time looked quite promising. After that, I feel we should have stuck with the prime tyre as the option was giving up during the first timed lap. I was unable to maintain a good level of grip over the whole track, so I was losing time, especially towards the end of the lap. It’s a shame, because with my penalty I will be at the back of the grid. So I’m hoping for rain…..lots of rain!”

The FIA have confirmed that Sebastian Vettel will be handed a five-grid slot penalty for Sunday's Monaco GP after changing his gearbox.

Vettel's team Toro Rosso are racing their new STR3 for the first time at this weekend's Monte Carlo race.

However, a new car means a new gearbox and that, for Vettel at least, means a penalty as the German was supposed to change his gearbox for another three races.

Under this year's regulations the same gearbox must be used for four races and Vettel had only used his for one event, the Turkish GP.
